Where the game comes from
Shedding games where the played card must match the colour or number of the top card grew out of an American card family from the early 20th century, in which the eight served as the wild card. An ordinary deck was all it took.
Purpose-made decks with action cards followed: skip, reverse, pass the drawing pressure along. That shifted the game from shedding to timing — the strongest card is rarely the one you can play immediately.
