Where the game comes from
Boards that grow from below appeared in arcades in the early 1990s. The idea reversed the direction everyone was used to: instead of falling from above, new material pushed up from the floor, turning a patience puzzle into a race.
Underneath sits an older rule from puzzle mathematics — group neighbours of the same colour and remove them together. Larger groups count for more, which forces a constant trade between clearing something safe now and building something worth more later.
