Strategy
Build a low, even surface from the opening pieces and reserve one narrow well near an edge. Place shapes so their upper faces remain usable and never roof over an empty cell. Rotate early while there is room for sideways correction. The prepared well is worthwhile only while a long piece can close several rows; clear smaller lines instead when the stack begins to threaten safety.
As speed rises, read the next shape while positioning the current one. Break down tall peaks with suitable cross pieces and abandon a large-clear setup before it becomes a liability. Accelerate the fall only after choosing rotation and column. A low board with several acceptable placements survives an awkward sequence better than a perfect-looking structure dependent on one particular piece.
Common mistakes
- Covering holes makes them expensive to repair; ensure every empty cell remains reachable from above before locking a piece.
- Waiting indefinitely for one long piece raises the stack; abandon the well when a safe line clear becomes necessary.
- Rotating near the floor leaves no correction room; choose orientation early and then move into the target column.

Where the game comes from
In 1984, a program written at a Moscow research institute dropped shapes made of four squares, which could be turned and shifted before they landed. The idea came from an older physical puzzle using exactly those four-square pieces.
It spread through colleagues and copied disks to Hungary and onward to the West long before anybody discussed rights to it. What remains is a rule you can explain in one sentence and a speed that rises until nobody can keep up.

How are rows removed in Block Stack?
A horizontal row disappears when every cell in it is occupied, and all material above drops afterward. Closing several rows together scores strongly, but it requires a controlled structure without covered holes.
Does Endless mode become faster?
Yes. Falling shapes speed up as the run continues. Less time remains for rotation and sideways movement, which makes a low, readable surface increasingly valuable during the later stages.
When should I use the fast drop?
Accelerate only after the shape's rotation and destination are certain. The faster fall saves time, but it also removes the chance to correct a missed edge, hidden gap or wrong column.
