2048 – play online for free
2048 is played on a 4×4 grid: every swipe moves all tiles, equal values merge, and a new tile appears. Each move creates progress and consumes space at the same time.
FunPort supports undo and lets the run continue beyond 2048, making a stable board structure essential.

Merge to 2048
- Swipe to slide all tiles in one direction.
- Equal tiles merge into one — values add up.
- A wrong swipe? Undo brings it back.
- Reach 2048 — then keep going for highscores.
Practical strategy tips
- Keep the highest tile in one corner.
- Build a descending chain along one edge.
- Avoid swipes that pull the high tile away from its corner.
- Use undo to learn before the grid is almost full.
Strategy
Choose a corner for the highest tile early and direct the board toward it. Build a descending chain along the adjacent edge so equal values can be combined without disturbing the anchor. Use two main swipe directions, with a third reserved for controlled reordering. Move away from the protected corner only when the action creates an immediate stronger merge and leaves a clear route back.
On a crowded board, preserve future legal moves rather than pursuing one attractive merge. Combine small values away from the anchor, then feed the result into the ordered edge. Keep at least one empty cell as a buffer for the new tile after each swipe. Undo can compare two sequences and reveal which one preserves order; the same structure remains useful after reaching the target value.
Common mistakes
- Swiping freely in all directions dislodges the anchor tile; follow a consistent corner and edge plan.
- Combining equal values wherever possible can scramble the chain; merge pairs in an order that preserves descending values.
- Saving undo only for disaster misses its learning value; compare early branches and retain the one with more options.

Where the game comes from
The ancestor is the sliding puzzle: a frame, one empty square, tiles pushed around it. In the 1880s such a puzzle caused a genuine craze across Europe and America, complete with prize money offered for an arrangement that was provably impossible to reach.
The twist arrived in 2014: instead of sorting tiles, equal numbers merge into their double on collision. It was written over a single weekend as a free exercise, and because the source was open, hundreds of variants existed within weeks.
Frequently asked questions
Does every tile move on a swipe?
Yes. All tiles that can travel move in the chosen direction. Equal values meeting along that path combine, and then a new tile appears. Even a swipe without a merge can therefore consume important space.
Does the run stop when the target tile appears?
No. You may continue after creating the target and pursue larger values or a better score. The same corner-and-edge structure still applies, although maintaining it becomes harder as the board fills.
What is undo useful for in 2048?
Undo reverses an unwanted swipe. It can rescue a damaged board, but it is also a learning tool: compare how two directions affect the value order, empty cells and number of available follow-up moves.
Why play 2048 on FunPort?
- One swipe changes the entire board and demands forward planning.
- Doubling values makes progress immediate and easy to understand.
- Play remains strategically open after the main target appears.
