Strategy
On the 3x3 board, the centre is the most flexible cell: it belongs to four winning lines, each corner to three and each edge to two. Take the centre when an opponent opens on a corner or edge; answer a central opening with a corner. From then on, use the same checklist every turn: can you win now, must you block an immediate win, or can you create a fork with two winning threats?
The 4x4 board still requires only three marks, so a long row contains several overlapping winning segments. Track every three-cell segment rather than judging the whole row at once; one mark can support two neighbouring threats. On 5x5, four marks are required. Connected pairs and open-ended triples matter more there than scattered territory. Build around shared cells so that one new mark advances more than one possible winning line.
Common mistakes
- Opening on an edge of the 3x3 board. It belongs to only two winning lines; the centre and corners offer more routes.
- Ignoring an enemy two-in-a-row on 5x5 because four are needed there. Lines grow faster than you can block them afterwards.
- Repeating the same opening after every loss. Rotate between centre and corners to learn different kinds of positions.

Where the game comes from
The Romans played terni lapilli, in which each player had three counters and slid them once all were placed. Grids for it are scratched into Roman pavements and can still be seen in ruins today.
As a paper game it took the form every child knows — along with that form's limit: with no mistakes, every game is drawn. That is exactly why it became the standard example for showing how a computer searches a game to the end.
