Where the game comes from
The modern form appeared in an American puzzle magazine in 1979 under the name Number Place. Its inventor, a retired architect, gave the puzzles the property they still have: exactly one solution, reachable by reasoning alone.
Five years later a Japanese publisher picked it up and added two rules of its own — no more than 32 givens, arranged symmetrically. In that shape it returned to Europe in 2004, when a British newspaper began printing one every day.
