Where the game comes from
Pipe and conduit puzzles arrived in the late 1980s: rotate the segments until a continuous route exists. Originally a liquid raced through them against the clock; the calmer variant, where only the finished route counts, came later.
Electricity changes the logic. A line only carries when both ends match, and every bulb has to be lit at the same time. So you solve from the edges inward: a corner piece has two possible orientations, a cross piece has many.
